Students studying the discipline of cultural studies will address a range of cultural and sociological questions, using a combination of theory and research methods. Topics to be considered include: cultural diversity, popular culture, ethnicity, youth sub-cultures, urban cultures and researching cultural practices.
Cultural studies considers our everyday practices, how we understand the world around us, the meaning we attach to spaces such as the city and how we create our identity via our cultural practices such as the music we listen to, books or magazines we read or the lifestyles we choose. The distinction between high and popular, or mass culture is explored, thus revealing the hierarchy of cultural value in today's society.
These aspects are offered within the wider sociological view of the world, ensuring that the production, consumption and practices of culture are considered within a view of social structure, and individuals within it.
